Thank you for your interest in our art galleries. The Newton Free Library mounts 23 exhibits per year in our two exhibit spaces (Gallery and Main Hall). As one of the busiest public library buildings in Massachusetts, our galleries are highly sought after and well-loved by library patrons. A jury of professional artists meets twice each year to select shows for the following year.

Art Submissions are now open for the January – June 2025 period.

Due Date for Submissions and Notification of Results

  • Please assure your submission is received by 11:59PM on Friday, July 19, 2024
  • Artists who are selected will be notified by Friday, September 13, 2024

Guidelines for Applying and Showing

Eligibility

  • Artists
    • Must live in New England.
    • Must be available for at least 4 of the 6 months in the current round.
    • Can’t have shown at the Newton Free Library in the last two years. 
    • Artists from a variety of ethnicities and life experiences are encouraged to apply.
  • Artwork:
    • Must be original.
    • Must be recent- created within the last three years.
    • Must be wall-hung with a wire using the Walker Display System. Cannot exceed 6″ in depth.
    • No free-standing sculptural pieces.
    • No giclée reproductions except for giclée printed photographs.
    • No obscene, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate pieces for the library environment.

Preparing an Application Packet

Please email as a zip (compressed) folder or share a folder via Google Drive to: artapplication@newtonfreelibrary.net

  • 12 JPEGs of recent artwork. The JPEGs must be named as follows: Image Number_Artist’s Last Name_Dimensions specifying inches or feet_ Name of Piece_Medium_Year Produced. 
    • For example: 1_Smith_24x23inches_Rose­_oiloncanvas_2023
  • A Word or Google document listing works 1-12 in the following format:
    • Image Number_Artist’s Last Name_Dimensions specifying inches or feet_ Name of Piece_Medium_Year Produced. 
    • For example:
      • 1 Smith 24×23” Rose­ oil on canvas 2023
      • 2 Smith 12×12” Tulip oil canvas 2022
  • A Word or Google document with:
    • a brief description of your work (50 words or less),
    • any scheduling conflicts (you must be available to show for at least 4 out of the 6 months in the current round),
    • how you heard about our art exhibits,
    • whether you have shown here before and if so, specify the date.
  • A one-page art-related resumé. Your name and contact information must be included (email address, postal mail address and phone number).

Additional Information

  • Group Applications: Submit one combined packet including only 12 JPEGs, one combined description of the works, one list of works and one resume. If you are unable to apply via email, a flash drive with your images and supporting documents can be mailed or dropped off at Newton Free Library, Attn: Administration, 330 Homer St., Newton, MA 02459. 
  • Accepted artists are responsible for hanging their work. Please avoid adhering to or applying anything directly to our walls.
  • The library will determine which month and which gallery your show will take place. The assignments are fixed and cannot be changed. 
  • The Newton Free Library takes no commission for work sold, does not hold insurance for artwork on exhibit and is not responsible for loss or damage of the artist’s work.
  • Exhibiting artists will be asked to sign a waiver the day the show is hung.
  • We are unable to consider incomplete or incorrect submissions.
