In a regular year, over a 1/2 million items are borrowed from the Newton Free Library Children’s Room. Your love of reading makes us one of the busiest Children’s Rooms in the state — in fact, if the Children’s Room were its own library it would be the 14th busiest library building in Massachusetts.

To create a warm and welcoming space to match the demands of this busy space, we’re embarking on a major expansion and renovation to the Children’s Room to make this space more functional and inviting for new readers and their families! We look forward to sharing updates as this project unfolds.

This project is made possible by the City of Newton and Newton Free Library Board of Trustees.

Help Make This Renovation Remarkable!

Our Trustees are actively fundraising to outfit the room with new furniture, shelving and technology. For more information on how to contribute:

City of Newton’s Library Solar Canopy Installation & Parking Lot Project

City of Newton's Library Solar Canopy Parking Lot Project

Canopy construction is completed, and our parking lot is OPEN with greater parking availability!

The City of Newton has begun construction on the Library parking lot to increase capacity and accessibility, improve drainage, and add solar canopies as part of the City’s Climate Action Plan. The project will:

  • Generate solar energy to provide 40% of the Library’s electricity use
  • Add 21 parking spaces
  • Make sidewalks wider and add a new crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety
  • Improve accessible parking spots with closer proximity to the Library
  • Improve storm water infrastructure
  • Add 8 electric vehicle charging spots
  • Improve wayfinding signage

This is a two phase project:

  • Phase one includes building the solar canopies in Summer 2021.
  • Phase two will be to improve the storm water infrastructure and repave the parking lot and occur in Spring 2022.
