Do you want to study English? The Newton Free Library can help! Our popular English Language Learning Program helps adult learners who want to practice conversation, expand their vocabulary, improve their grammar, learn about American culture, and more. Our learners are at all levels of English proficiency and have diverse needs and goals.
Our wonderful volunteers are caring individuals who help integrate English learners into the community. Volunteers typically provide one-on-one tutoring. Some also lead larger classes and conversation groups.
Do you want to study English with a tutor?
Tutors usually meet with students one-on-one, either in person or online. Use the link below to apply. You must live in Newton or Chestnut Hill, and you must be at least 18 years old. Are you interested in volunteering as an English tutor?
We are always looking for new tutors! You don’t need to live in Newton to volunteer. You must be at least 18 years old. Click on the link below to apply, and learn more on our Tutor Frequently Asked Questions page.
Group Classes
We offer a variety of classes and conversation groups for ELL students. Students who live in any city or town in Massachusetts can participate. You must be at least 18 years old.
Some classes require registration, while others are “drop-in” (registration is not required). Some are in person, and some are online. There are four sessions per year. Click on the link below to view the current list of classes. You can also click on “Events” at the top of the page and select “For English Learners.”
Citizenship
If you are interested in studying with a tutor to prepare for U.S. citizenship, please contact the coordinator. This opportunity is for students who have already applied for citizenship or who are planning to apply soon.
