In the Children’s Room: Proud to be me!

Stop by anytime during the month of June to participate in a scavenger hunt throughout the children’s room based on the colors of the Pride flag! Throughout the month we also have a variety of pride-themed events.

  • Thursday, June 6th at 4:00pm Parade Crafts
    Stop by to make some noisemakers and other crafts perfect for the Pride Parade! Even if you aren’t going to the parade, these crafts will help you celebrate loud and proud all month long! This event is recommended for ages 5 and up. 
  • Tuesday, June 18th at 4:00pm Pride Floats
    Transform a simple cardboard box into a wearable, dazzling parade float! Kids will use the provided materials to make their very own colorful creations before stepping inside for a mini parade! Registration will be available for kids ages 3 and up starting Tuesday, June 4.
  • Saturday, June 22nd at 10:30am Dance Party
    Celebrate Pride and the start of summer with a high energy dance party! This program is best suited for ages 3-8 but all ages are welcome- just bring your dancing shoes!
  • Friday, June 28th at 4:00pm Rock Painting
    Celebrate Pride and this start of summer with rock painting and fizzy sidewalk paint! If weather permits this program will be on the front patio of the library. In case of inclement weather we will be in the Children’s Program Room. All supplies will be provided but if you can find a smooth, hand sized rock bring it along! For children ages 5 and up.

In the Tween/Teen Room: Proud to be me!

Happy Pride! We’re so excited to celebrate! Join us for some joyous decorations, displays, and events in the Teen Area!

  • Friday, May 31 at 4:00pm Decorate Your Space!
    Take a Friday afternoon to hang out in the library’s Teen/Tween Area to decorate your space for Pride Month! There will be snacks, music, and lots of crafts to decorate the library! Registration is recommended. For grades 5-12.
  • Monday, June 3 Take & Make: Pride Friendship Bracelets & More!
    To celebrate Pride, we’re handing out supplies to create beautiful rainbow friendship bracelets. There will be additional accessories to decorate yourself this Pride included in the bag. Grades 5-12.
  • Wednesday, June 5 at 4:30pm Pride Book Tasting
    Take a seat and enjoy a snack while you “taste” some new LBGTQIA+ books that our librarians will discuss with you! We will have tables for tweens and tweens. There will also be time at the end of the hour to have a librarian help you find your next read! For grades 5-12.
  • Thursday, June 20 at 7:00pm Mercury Stardust: Virtual Author Talk and Q&A
    From TikTok stardom to full-blown author, join us virtually on June 20th at 7:00 PM as we welcome famous trans handywoman, Mercury Stardust! The Newton Free Library, in conjunction with 50+ other libraries state-wide, is proud to present an author talk & moderated Q&A with Mercury herself. Mercury is the acclaimed author of “Safe and Sound: A Renter Friendly Guide to Home Repair” and has also dedicated her time to helping people on TikTok reclaim their independence through home improvement. As an out and proud non-binary trans feminine person, Mercury has also used her platform to help raise over $2 million for trans healthcare. This program is intended for people ages 13+ and registration is required. Click on the link above to register.
  • Tuesday, June 25 at 6:30pm Pride Jeopardy!
    Let our librarians test your pride knowledge! There will be pizza, refreshments, and prizes! Stop by as an individual or as a team. Registration is required. Grades 6-12.

  • Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00pm Art Night: Weave Your Pride
    Celebrate Pride Month with a night of artistry, community building, and empowerment in a safe and supportive space. Alex Makes Art will be leading Weave Your Pride, a mixed media experience in TEXTILES! We will work our way through raffia ribbon, roving wool, embroidery floss, ribbon, and other types of textured bits. There will be a bead buffet and other adornments to add along the way!
